Looking after our people is central to our values, and we are proud to play our part in ensuring help is available to anyone in the grocery sector who may be facing difficult times.
It’s why we’re passionate about supporting GroceryAid, the charity for the grocery sector.
So we were delighted when a team from Princes took part in this year’s Co-op Windermere Row to raise funds for GroceryAid.
The ultimate team water challenge sees boatloads of Co-op and industry colleagues take to Lake Windermere for a gruelling ten-mile row, split across two sessions in the morning and afternoon. It’s followed with an evening of networking and celebration at Low Wood Bay Resort.
In our boat this year was Channel Controller John Owen, Sales Director Adam Norcott and RGM Director Kim Matthews all from Princes Group, as well as Dan Maltby, Head of Commercial Grocery at Co-op.
John said: “We took part in the morning row and it was great fun and very competitive.
“All four of us in our boat are into our fitness and train outside of work. We all wore Branston Baked Beans t-shirts to help power us.
“The boats in the challenge are very traditional rowing boats and we took it in turns to row. It was quite choppy and the oars of other boats can get quite close during the race. We misjudged a buoy at one point and had a slight collision but we quickly got back on track.
“It took six laps of the lake to row ten miles and we were really pleased to finish seventh out of 23 with a time of 1 hour 36 minutes – just ten minutes off the fastest time.
“We’re proud to support such an important cause. A big thank you to Co-op and GroceryAid for organising such a fantastic event and a huge well done to everyone who took part.
“The event raised thousands of pounds for Grocery Aid and, importantly, it highlighted the vital support available to people throughout the grocery industry. It was also a great opportunity to network with lots of suppliers.”
Last year, Princes was awarded Gold for the second year running at GroceryAid Awards in recognition of our industry support.
The awards are an annual programme run by GroceryAid, the UK grocery industry’s central charity, which has provided financial, emotional and practical support to grocery workers and their families since 1857.
The awards recognise companies that go above and beyond to raise awareness of the charity, fundraise for its work and volunteer time or expertise to support its mission. Organisations can earn Bronze, Silver or Gold status depending on the breadth of their activities across these pillars.
